N2 - Summary. Elderly, drugs, Nursing homes: when settings matter more than problems. A focus group was organized to explore the main problems and open questions of Nursing Home nurses in the administration of drug therapies. The majority of problems did not involve the drug itself but the problems for whom it is administered and the administration problems. The administration of drugs is also a time consuming task as most drugs need to be crushed for patients (the vast majority in some settings) with swallowing problems. The rules for a correct administration cannot be easily respected, especially with dementia patients that are not able to take a deep breath (nebulized treatments cannot be administered) or may suddenly refuse the food (and to avoid hypoglycemia insulin is administered after lunch). The list of problems, questions and cases produced will be the basis for a setting-tailored update on drug administration.
