N2  -  Summary. What is not, and cannot be, defined as a challenging methodological opportunity: talking of advanced competences. The area of advanced competences for the nursing profession is assumed as an interesting model situation for the challenges faced more broadly by the health care systems, in providing appropriate answers to the increasingly complex and heterogeneous clinical conditions which require cross sectional multisciplinary interventions. It is argued that this scenario must be faced with a clearly defined research strategy, to minimize the risk of looking to solutions which are mostly directed to the managerial aspects of the problems much more than to the real individual and collective patients needs and rights. A methodological framework is proposed which could provide a guidance for testing research objectives in the most controversial and relevant areas (chronic disorders, out of hospital settings, fragile-elderly populations) where a flexible integration of advanced competences could and should be specifically needed and effective.
