N2  -  Summary. The citizens’ involvement in the generation of knowledge: between hope and feasibility. Patient and citizen’s participation is now regarded as central to the promotion of sustainable health and health care and their involvement includes also the definition of research priorities. In most cases citizens are rather passive participants and more researched than researchers. Involvement efforts create and encounter many diverse problems and ethical challenges that may enhance or undermine their success. Despite its agreed importance, a real participation is far from being reached. It would require new languages and methods and efforts on both parts. Citizen and patient’s participation must have a significant influence on the way we do research and set priorities, if its potential is to be fulfilled.
