N2 - Summary. Do opioids make chronic users more sensitive to pain? At high doses opioids seem to amplify pain by changing signaling in the central nervous system, making the body more sensitive to pain. This phenomenon is already known but difficult to diagnose, thus its prevalence is unknown. It is assumed that it could play a role in the epidemics of opioids abuse. The mechanisms of opioids induced hyperalgesia and the most recent research to describe and revers it are described.
