N2 - Summary. Blood cultures from peripheral and central venous catheter: literature review and practical implications. Detecting the presence of microorganisms in blood is an important technique that allows the prompt isolation, identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacterial isolate. The results of the test are the basis for the selection and dosage of the antimicrobics. The principles and techniques for blood collection have been reviewed according to the most up to date literature, and presented to offer a guidance for best practice and care.
