N2 - Summary. How to plan and conduct study on restraints use: notes on methods. Physical restraint is a procedure used frequently in long-term and acute care. It is a controversial practice because its use is associated with numerous complications and also affects freedom and individual autonomy. The different results of the studies that range from none to 100% of restrained patients reflect different methods, definitions and local policies. Some reflections and suggestions on how to measure the use of restraints are proposed: the use of mixed methods, with the involvement of patients, when possible, and relatives, to include their perspective; the selection of what to measure, recognizing the importance of accounting for patients data and circumstances, and information on the contexts; the collection of data not limited to a mere description but able to describe avoidable cases of restraint use and offer reflections on how to promote a change.
