N2  -  Summary. Health care as cultural-political indicator of the society: the role of general and specialized publishers. The 40th anniversary of the institution of the Italian NHS is taken as the opportunity for documenting the structural interdependence between the characteristics of an health system and the social and cultural (even more than political) framework of the surrounding civil society. Consistently with this original (i.e. intuitively well known, but de facto forgotten) approach, the role that has been played by editors of health related books, today at higher risk of irrelevance, is underlined and illustrated with the long term and most recent publications of the Il Pensiero Scientifico, which has bridged also the Italian with the global evolution of the main determinants of health care.
