N2  -  Summary. The problems in the interpretation of the studies on the relationship between staffing and patients’ outcomes: the case of the RN4CAST studies. The number of studies showing the relationship between staffing characteristics (included the number and qualification) is increasingly growing. However, most of the studies adopted a cross sectional design and the results are presented with mean data, that do not account for the important differences in outcomes, staff characteristics, organizational caring models across involved wards. A critical analysis of the RN4CAST studies, the most important studies that showed the relationship between staff characteristics and outcomes is proposed, focusing on the heterogeneity of contexts, on the skill mix that should account also for doctors and nurse assistants and the measurements of care actually received by patients.
